Just when you thought it was safe to go out the dreaded Swine Flu epidemic has sprung back up.
Those little piggies just don’t know when to give up do they?
Below is an article from the Times.
Swine flu might be getting deadlier
Cases of the new resistant strain reported in Japan, Denmark
AS A new case of swine flu was confirmed in South Africa yesterday, health authorities around the world were keeping a watchful eye on a new strain of the virus.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases has confirmed 31 South African cases of the disease as the figure worldwide creeps towards the 100,000 mark.
The institute’s Nombuso Shabalala said its staff were bracing themselves for “many more” cases.
The spike in South African cases came after a sports tournament in Johannesburg, last week, at which student athletes are thought to have been exposed to the virus by another competitor. All of the athletes have made a full recovery.
Though most of the infections have caused relatively mild bouts of swine flu, there have been reports from Japan and Denmark of this strain of the A(H1N1) virus showing resistance to the antiviral drug Tamiflu.
But, so far, patients with complications have been successfully treated with the anti-flu drug.
Japanese media reported that a woman in Osaka took Tamiflu as a preventative measure in May but nevertheless contracted the flu.
She has recovered from the illness but at least two more instances of the drug-resistant genetic mutation of the virus have been reported in Denmark.
In the Middle East, the Palestinian Authority’s top Islamic cleric has issued a fatwa banning the issuing of marriage contracts without a certificate from the health ministry that shows that the couple are not infected with swine flu.
The religious edict was issued after more swine flu cases were registered on the West Bank.
About 60 people are reported to have died in Argentina in the past week, making it the third- worst-affected nation after the US and Mexico .
However it’s not all gloom and doom. It seems that the latest fashion rage has spread over to surgical masks.
Now no one can tell us if this will actually protect you from your spluttering colleauges but at least you can look good.
Wonder if Bruno has any mask wearing tips for us?
